I’m happy to accept there are uses for all of these but I most expect to get value from ABSYNTH and FM8 (which I believe is equivalent to a DX7 and comparable to the free Dexed. You also get TRK-01, FORM, ROUNDS, KONTOUR, ABSYNTH and FM8 as well as PRISM SPARK. I’m sure there will be teething problems, but this must be a decent investment. Synthesizersįirst you get the new MASSIVE X when it comes out in July. REACTOR is the backbone to a lot of synths, and you also get to explore the new BLOCKS options. I’ve read these are good for relative beginners which describes me at the moment, so another bonus! You also get some special synth instruments in the form of HYBRID KEYS and ANALOG DREAMS (you get ETHEREAL EARTH in KOMPLETE START for free). That on its own is a big reason to invest.

Even if you don’t want the vast (55Gb) library of basic instruments it comes with, a huge number of professional VSTs only run in KONTAKT not KONTAKT player. It’s pretty obvious, when you read any serious articles, KONTAKT is all but essential. These are the core of Komplete and this is a serious step, in that you get REAKTOR 6 and KONTAKT 6 instead of the PLAYER versions. I have only reviews and YouTube clips to use to make opinions, but even so I think the argument is still pretty clear. I’m using the Komplete Bundles comparison page to inform this discussion. There’s also the problem that both packages seems to have some similar elements, so does this reduce the value of upgrading to Komplete Standard if you already have Logic? Going from Komplete Select to Komplete Standard Is there enough there to justify the investment? I’ll walk through the sections of the product set and paint both sides of the picture.

You quickly realise a lot of people have Komplete in their arsenal (and I compare the packages from the pov of synthwave / prog rock here).īut, budget is probably tight as this is a hobby not a job, and you hang on for the (yearly?) sales and hope for a half-price upgrade from Select to Standard. While that’s all to the good, there’s a case for getting some extra instruments / sounds. The AI drummers are rather useful as well. It comes with a great synth (Alchemy), some other synths/instruments, loops and various effects.

There are options but if you’ve a Mac there’s no strong reason for a beginner not to get Apple’s own Logic Pro X. Well, at some point you want a real workstation package (DAW).
You’ve got a Mac / Garageband / a midi controller / some free synth packages, the free Komplete Startand even the upgrade to Komplete Select. Then again the point of a hobby is fun, stimulation and even the odd dream, so why not live a little. Yes the presets sound wonderful and yes you need some skill in mixing / mastering / tweaking but really having Omnisphere or a freeware package like Dexed makes little difference if you don’t know what you’re doing. In most cases the dull things like practising scales on a basic keyboard will add as much to your quality as buying a new synth package. There’s a role for these things, but really it mostly boils down to:

There’s a huge temptation to get some new and shiny piece of software or hardware and the dream it will make the difference to your music. Music production (via computer and keyboards) is one of those hobbies that can take as much time and money as you want to give it. Let me take you through my thought process (and it’s a long post)…
The conclusion is yes there is some overlap, but so what. It looks at just how much overlap there is between Apple’s DAW and the standard version of Komplete 12. If you’ve popped by the checkpoint before, you’ll notice I’ve been dabbling with Komplete 12 and other bits of Native Instruments vast range, and the purpose of this post is to explore the next step on the path with regards music production as a hobby. In case you’re wondering, this post is about the overlap (at least in my mind) between Logic Pro X and the Native Instruments Komplete 12 software.
